A Forgotten Corner Corners of the urban core are often forgotten places. This particular corner of Midtown was rather dramatically sliced up by the addition of the Business 80 freeway. |
Hmmmm… sounds like a perfect site for some really creative eco-urban thinking. Here was a chance to bring some overdue definition to a lost section of land. Maybe jump-start other community upgrades.
Eco-Urban Up Close
And the proximity to two significant amenities grabbed our attention right away…a few short blocks away, residents would have access to a light rail station and the Sacramento Natural Foods Coop, Sacramento’s most prominent eco-urban establishment. Residents could walk or ride the 9 blocks to one of Midtown’s favorite bistros, Cafe Bernardos or its ritzier brother, Paragary’s or check out the art/music scene at HQ:Headquarters for the Arts. And of course, everything in central city wasn’t far either.
The Building Next Door
That might just have been enough for us, but even closer (in fact, just across the street) stood an inspiring motivator—the historic Newton Booth School. Architecturally, the structure would demand respect from whatever we built there. Nothing faux historic but enough reference points for some dialogue between the buildings.
The Freeway?
But what about that freeway? We simply hired the best architect. David Mogavero is Past President of ECOS, so when he told us the freeway was the element of the project that most intrigued him, Newton Booth became a reality.
This was the fastest deal we’ve closed to date.
