I just read the first chapter of Thomas Friedman’s new book Hot Flat and Crowded and it’s incredible. I knew this guy could write from his other works, but this time it’s off the charts. He is hitting straight to the most important issue we will face in our generation. America needs to get off oil and start a green revolution. He is not talking about just recycling or using less styrofoam he is pushing us to lead the world in a all out effort to make build for ourselves a sustainable existence. It’s a daunting task but one that we must begin.

I heard him on NPR say something that Bono has also said: “You don’t change light bulbs, you change leaders.”
Grass-roots activism is clearly catching on, but for those who refuse to budge from their privileged perch of consumerism, our leaders must step up to this great challenge of meeting energy demands with new, more sustainable technology.
Friedman, in that same show, also spoke towards the “Drill, baby, drill!” at the Republican National Convention and how, in his mind, he was imagining tyrants of Russia and Iran salivating over our lemming-like proclivities for an insatiable, oil-based economy. Change our leaders, not our light bulbs!
