Ever played Cranium? Well if not let me fill you in on some of the lingo. When you pull a card called “All Play” that means everyone at the table has to participate in the challenge. So today we are going to do an “All Play”, meaning everyone has to comment. Ready?…. Go!
The question…..
Which household uses less energy?
a. A 2008 built energy efficient home with dual pane windows and air tight construction located in a subdivision 15 miles from the city center.
b. A 100 year old craftsman home with single pane windows and gas radiant heating located .03 miles from the city center.
The correct answer will be posted here Wednesday the 13th.

If you’re asking, I assume the answer is ‘B’.

Yeah you have to be thinking its B. But I do not think there is any way it could be. I am going with my gut here and say its A. And if you are going to try and say I am wrong this Wednesday then I am going to want to see some proof.

If even 1 person must commute daily (school, work, etc.) then it is overwhelmingly B. If the occupants of the old craftsman are also able and willing to walk to shops and work and entertainment, the advantage in energy is increased, as well as their quality of life! I also think that radiant heat is the most energy-efficient.

The question is sort of tricky. “Which is more polluting to the environment?” might be a better way to state it? Constructing a brand new home is going to take a lot of energy. No energy is expended in building a 100 year old home. On a daily usage basis, however, I would definitely say A uses less. I’m not going to make assumptions on the gas mileage usage of the occupants.

JoAnne, your point is a good one about the construction. I think the question is more a point of total household usage myself instead of construction. I have to go with B.

The difference in the construction methods would play a major role. A hand saw held by a carpenter who rode his horse to the site that day used on wood cut from a nearby forest vs an electric saw held by a carpenter who drove one of the 7 gas guzzling F350 pickup trucks to the site that day cutting wood grown in Canada. Hmm… I have to say B.
