Seen this feature on Google yet? Its pretty cool if you can figure out how to access it (took me about 5 minutes but I’m not the brightest tech-monkey in the world, either).
Here’s instructions on how to use it.
Here’s how it looks on your screen. What’s cool is that it gives you departure streaming data that’s up to the minute!
I love that this tab shows up right next to “drive there”; it tells every person using the map that there are options. Simple add-on features to existing map-related sites will go a long way toward helping people understand there are different ways of getting around than driving.
I want to see about a “Bike There” option. How ’bout it, Google?

Asher,
Maybe that is a subliminal hint that you should be riding your bike. He he.

I’ve used this Google feature in other cities, and now our own Sacto’s got it!? Sweeeet. Anyone know if works on a mobile phone?

I think this is a major step in the right direction! Way to go Google.

Yeah, the bike option really would be great. Although sending bicyclists on bike routes ONLY might send people on some very circuitous routes. There are a lot of quiet, lesser traveled streets in Sac that are actually safer and easier to ride on than the designated bike routes, especially north/south streets. Maybe someday these online routing systems will become sophisticated enough where the average traffic volumes, combined with street types and other data, etc.

Sacramento County is updating their bicycle master plan. They plan to get enough data to be able to put together a trip planning tool, and set it up, so City of Sac (or other cities) can add to it. It would be able to send bikes down street or on bike trails, and you might even be able to select you riding skill level to help it choose. I’m not certain they’ve got all the money, etc., but at least they are trying to do it.
Have you seen London, UK’s trip planner. You can select your desired modes: walk, bus, bike, train, boat, and maybe some others, and it will find routes for you.

haven’t seen the UK trip planner myself but it sounds hecka-cool… especially if London incorporated the RentalBike program currently used in paris and holland. do they have anything like that there?
