I was riding into work the other day and pulled up behind a set of Fallen Leaf Tree Service massive chipper and hauling trucks – the kind that normally spray nasty diesel exhaust all over. But this one had a sticker on the back that caught my eye “All Fallen Leaf Tree Service equipment powered by Biodiesel.” I couldn’t help myself – I pulled my bike up near the exhaust pipe and took a whiff. It didn’t smell quite like French fries, but it sure wasn’t petro diesel!
Wow – that is a serious commitment to run all your equipment on an alternative fuel! I had to verify it and called up their arborist Analisa (who was writing an arborist report for me anyway) to check if it is for real. Yup – everything except some of the chainsaws that can’t run on it are burning biodiesel. She added that all the wood chips are resold as mulch as well.
Green industry like tree care and landscape services should be leading the green revolution. It’s the right place for them. Leaf blowers are my least favorite things in the world (and it seems I’m not alone –some communities have even banned them), and they appear to be everywhere I go this season. Can everyone ask their gardeners to use a rake and a broom? Pay them more if you have to!
We contracted Fallen Leaf to harvest the trees on our land, and I have to say that, seeing this kind of eco-commitment makes us especially glad to be working with them. Thanks Fallen Leaf for taking the lead – let see if we can get more followers on board!

Steve,
Ramos Oil in West Sac sells biodiesel. I haven’t personally gone over to check it out yet but I will when I get tabs on a diesel motor for the Cruiser. The reason it didn’t smell like french fries is because there is a misconception in the public about what biodiesel is. Bio diesel is a mix of alcohol, plant oil, and diesel fuel and is referred to as B80 or B100 depending on the content. SVO or straight vegetable oil is also able to be run through diesel motors with minor modifications. That is what would give you the french fry odor while running. Not many people are SVO just because of availability. I rode my bike by a guy at LaBou on Stockton the other day who was reclaiming the oil for them out of their grease trap. He said he would sell oil from the restaurants that get captures for $1.50/Gal. Interesting ….
Hey I am up in Portland this weekend and they have a bunch of buses running on biodiesel up here. Cool stuff.
