Plan the next 2 months and no more. But set values that last a lifetime.
Planning too far ahead will only disappoint you or keep you from seeing a better way to do things. Often you have to be in the heat of a problem to find out that you were going about it all wrong. Only a strong understanding of your core values will guide you through a situation like that, no way you could rely on mere plans or goals.
Don’t be a rock star.
The guy who has to get all the credit is always the one who is overlooking the talented people around him. Always.
Listen….
Not just to what people are saying but also to what is between the lines and after the long pauses. If people pause for a while it’s normally because they are thinking of something good to say not because they want you to fill the dead space. The best ideas are rarely yours and often from the person you never expected.
Stop and throw it all away.
Often people have a vision for how to make money. And often that vision will work. But if you have not defined the culture first you missed the main part. You are then in business only to make money, and I can’t think of anything worse to think back to on my death bed. But if you set out to change the world and define a culture of people who care, right from the start, you really have something to build on. If you are off track here, stop and throw it all away and do it right the next time. Trust me, its worth it.
Find yourself
Then get to know your self really well, then find other people that know themselves really well, and let them lead where they are better than you.
Know the economic engine you are building well.
But don’t get hung up on making every dollar there is to make. You do far better by being remarkable at what you do than by squeezing money out of places you shouldn’t.
Change a lot.
Don’t be scared if things often look and feel different. Adapt and move ahead. What got you to where you are today will not get you where you need to go tomorrow. Sticking to an old habit is like saving old newspapers. You just don’t need them any more.
People who change the world first and let money come last make more money.
But its not the making the money that counts it’s the cool things you can do to change the world once you have it.
Don’t change what isn’t broken, in the same way never leave something broken just because you don’t understand it. If it looks broken it probably is.
Fix what you can first but learn about all the broken stuff you can so when you get to it you have had some time to think about how to fix it.
People are different, quirky and often way smarter than you think. Give them space to be themselves and they will show you where they shine.

Levi,
Thanks for sharing. I found your insights to be dead on with our experience at midtowngrid.com. We/I have learned some of these lessons the hard way. The concepts you set out are not only a path toward a better business, but to a better community as well.
Thanks.
Scott.
